It's time to celebrate your Jewish child becoming a Jewish adult! And what better way to celebrate than with a big, fully customized Bar or Bat Mitzvah bash? At Olio, we love hosting Mitzvah parties in our blank slate space. Because every aspect of the space can be customized, families and celebrants can decide exactly how they want guests to experience this big moment.
There are so many options when searching for a venue, and finding the right bat or bar mitzvah venue will set the tone for the entire event and create an atmosphere that is both meaningful and enjoyable.
First, a bit about Mitzvahs for those who don't know: Bar and Bat Mitzvahs are an opportunity for Jewish boys and girls to participate in prayers, read from the Torah, and analyze the reading. Students practice for months or years to be ready to present this knowledge in front of friends, family, and their Jewish community. This is typically done for girls and boys around age 12 or 13 in Jewish culture (7th grade). Following the service, families plan a luncheon or evening party to celebrate the Bar Mitzvah boy or Bat Mitzvah girl.
About me: I'm the owner of Olio and I've been planning weddings and events for more than a decade in the Boston area, with a focus on Jewish families.
Here are a few key things to look for in your search for a Boston Bar Mitzvah venue or Boston Bat Mitzvah venue in Massachusetts and the North Shore area.
Venue Capacity
Make sure the venue you choose can accommodate the number of guests you plan to invite. Consider not only space for the meal, but also flexible space for dancing, buffet, bar, photo booth, and other activities.
At Olio, our 6,000 square foot flexible loft space layout is cool and unique for a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah large and small. Some clients choose to divide the space, perfect for having a separation between kids and adults, and some keep it open.
Location
Choose a venue that is convenient for both you and your guests, as well as near your chosen temple or synagogue, if you'll be having a ceremony the same day.
At Olio, we are conveniently located 25 minutes north of Boston and right off of the intersection of Routes 128 and 95. There are more than a dozen hotel options within 15 minutes of our location, including a Marriott just 5 minutes away. There are many synagogue and temple locations within close driving distance.
Catering
Food and drinks are a major part of any celebration, and a Bat Mitzvah or Bar Mitzvah is no exception. Look for a venue that offers quality catering options that are in line with your budget and dietary needs.
At Olio, we have a fantastic list of expert caterers who are well-versed in the requirements of both adult-focused and kid-focused menus. In addition, Olio allows clients to bring in an off-list caterer (with approval) so if there is a caterer you are dying to work with, anything is possible!
Atmosphere
The venue you choose should reflect the spirit of the Bar Mitzvah boy or Bat Mitzvah girl and create an atmosphere that is both meaningful and fun. Look for a space that can be decorated in a way that reflects your son's or daughter's personality and interests.
We created Olio as a blank slate venue specifically to appeal all types of themes and interests. We've seen so many ways to transform our venue with lighting, furniture, games, food stations, performers, and more!
Bonus Tips
A Bar Mitzvah planner or Bat Mitzvah planner is not required at Olio, but is strongly recommended so that you have a professional working to ensure all of your needs are met and vision is created onsite. Ask us for a list of planner referrals for your Mitzvah event at Olio!
Make sure to ask about timing at the venue you are scoping, since some venues host multiple events in a day. At Olio, we only host one event per day, which means maximum flexibility.
While we love to see big themes and installations and all-out décor, this is NOT a requirement at a space like Olio. Our beautiful, historic venue speaks for itself and allows the Bar Mitzvah boy or Bat Mitzvah girl to truly shine through.
No matter what venue you choose, remember that the most important thing is to celebrate your son's or daughter's transition into adulthood and honor your Jewish heritage. With a little planning and creativity, you can create a Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration that is truly unforgettable.
